One two-month cruise circling the Land Down Under was terminated in the wake of the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the vessel on a remote island.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but broke off from the excursion for a rest. The liner departed without her and came back several hours later after the personnel discovered the woman was unaccounted for.

An extensive search operation discovered her body the subsequent day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, in coordination with investigators and the official investigator.

Head of the voyage organizer stated that passengers and crew on the ship were informed that the rest of the journey had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that travelers would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the travelers via chartered flights".

Officials also published an latest communication, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Captain" prohibiting any additional guests from getting on the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its return.

The ship first departed Cairns on October 24th, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the senior passenger's demise. The tropical location was the opening port on the itinerary.

Passengers on the vessel - who generally pay substantial amounts of currency to participate in the voyage - were transported there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or snorkeling.

Family Statement

The child of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "surprised and saddened that the ship left Lizard Island after an scheduled outing without my mum".

In her statement, she characterized her parent as an "active elderly person" who was a participant of a bushwalking club.

"Based on limited information we have been provided, it appears that there was a failure of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She further stated that she wished the inquiry would be able to identify what "the company should have undertaken that might have protected Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the police that it was a very hot period, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to return, without accompaniment. Then the boat sailed away, apparently without conducting a passenger count.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or shortly after, she passed away, by herself."

Company Reaction

Via official communication, the Chief Executive verified that the operator was "collaborating extensively with authorities to support their examination".

He said that the organization was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had offered its total backing to the family.

Maritime Business Procedures

The ship serves up to one hundred twenty passengers with 46 staff, according to company information. It was specially constructed to enter distant areas of the nation's shoreline and is outfitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to take passengers on day excursions.

Incidents such as this are uncommon, and cruise ships have protocols to record which passengers are embarking or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] aboard simply isn't an choice," one expert commented.
