Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
