Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
