Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
